Deep and Wide

Deep and Wide is the boys' favorite song right now. McClain has successfully mastered the whole thing and Carson just gets a kick out of the "hmmm" and "hmmm" version!
Back in college, I remember sitting in a class one day and tearing this poor little song to shreds on the lack of "theological value" it provided. (This discussion was led by a professor--not self inflicted!) I've always kind of disliked that it was a song that my kids picked up so easily and then sang it repeatedly...until today! As they sang this song over and over and over in the car on the way to school, I thought there must surely be some sort of depth to this song. "Deep and wide. Deep and wide. There's a fountain flowing deep and wide..."
My first thought was that this song pretty much sums up all of God and His attributes...grace, mercy, love, supremacy, sovereignty, holiness, faithfulness, and many more...they are all pretty deep, wide, and flowing endlessly like a fountain.
Then these verses came to mind from Ephesians 3:
16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. 20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. 21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.
I think that may be it--although the first thought made sense too. I want my kids to know about the love of Christ--it's deeper than my feeble understanding and fickle thoughts, it's wider than my prejudicial, selfish mind can comprehend, and it never stops flowing. There is nothing I can do that would make God not love me. There is nothing my children can do that would stop God from loving them. I think "Deep and Wide" might just be a pretty good song after all!
